Hello, World: The Art of Introducing Yourself to New Neighbors

You're excited about moving into your new home. It feels strange to be a stranger, but you can't let that hold you back. You want to get to know your neighbors in Harvey, LA. Do it right and make lifelong friends up and down the new block.

Start on Move-In Day

This is your first chance to practice new-neighbor etiquette. Make sure the moving truck doesn't block anyone's driveway. Don't pile the curb with empty boxes. Keep your new front yard clear of first-day clutter. Transfer unpacked boxes and leftover moving gear to self storage, and sort things out later.

Strike Up Conversations

Introduce yourself to the neighbors by asking for neighborly advice. People enjoy being helpful, and you have a lot to take in. This is a great way to learn about your mail carrier's schedule, the nearest grocery stores and even the best places for gumbo and beignets.

Mind Your Manners

Good timing helps you mind your manners. Don't bother the folks next door during dinner. If they look busy with the kids, wave, and ask for neighborhood tips another time. Keep conversations short. Let them do most of the talking. There's no need to rush budding friendships.

Take It Outside

Enjoy your new neighbors while you enjoy the local outdoors. Greet familiar faces on your way to Harvey Park. Invite folks over for a backyard barbecue. Hang out on the porch in the evening, and wave at people passing by.

Make Friendly First Impressions

As you get to know folks in your area, look for them outside the neighborhood. Give them a warm greeting at the coffee shop. When you run into a new acquaintance at self storage, lend him or her a helping hand. It's easy to build lasting friendships with friendly first impressions.

Enjoy Getting Involved

Become a part of your new neighborhood by joining local groups and attending area events. Volunteer at the library or Harvey Community Center. Offer to help out at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. Make new friendships even stronger by making a positive difference in your new community.

Tips for Staying Clutter-Free in Your New Place

Your new home is a beautiful blank canvas. You can turn it into anything you want. This is your opportunity to break old habits and begin a new, clutter-free beginning here in Harvey, LA. Make it happen with simple move-in strategies ranging from donation boxes to nearby storage units

7 Easy Tips for a Clutter-Free Move-In

1. Focus on One Room

By unpacking one room at a time, you can sort through belongings and identify potential clutter. If it doesn't have a place in the new room, think about letting it go.

2. Downsize Stuff in Drawers

Make a pledge to make junk drawers a thing of the past. Promise to only put stuff in drawers that you really need and use. Extend this commitment from the kitchen to the bedroom and bathroom.

3. Give Everything a Place

Keep new home storage systems clutter-free by reserving different shelves, racks, and bins for specific items. It's easier to find keys, cell phones, and wallets when everything has a place.

4. Save Things in Self Storage

Cut down on clutter in new closets by moving seasonal clothes to self storage. Make the extra space a permanent, off-site part of home organizing. Use it to stash things like hobby supplies, holiday decorations, and sports gear.

5. Designate Donation Boxes

If you're not sure about keeping something, imagine the difference it might make to someone else. Designate home donation boxes for things you can give to different organizations and charities in Jefferson Parish.

6. Start Recycling Clutter

If it's not suitable as a donation, that clutter might be a candidate for recycling. It can help you help our parish environment too. Set up a recycling bin in your new home for paper, plastic, and even used moving boxes.

7. Slow Down on Shopping

Resist rushing out and buying new things for the new house. Plan just a few shopping trips to Uptown and the Garden District, and set a budget that keeps you on track so that you only purchase what you really need.

The Mississippi River, Lake Salvador and the Gulf of Mexico – Harvey, LA is surrounded by water everywhere. From the rivers to the sea, each body of water has a ton of aquatic life for your family to discover. On March 18, Safeguard Self Storage is celebrating Submarine Day by sharing awesome ways to learn about underwater exploration – including tips for turning your child’s room into an oasis under the sea.

Learning more about Underwater Life

Downtown Harvey, LA sits seven miles from the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. Whether it's stingrays, seahorses or sharks, you can see all types of aquatic life, as well as animals like the otter that love both water and land. During your visit, make sure to take the kids to the Penguin Pass, which takes them backstage for a chance to meet the penguins up close.

On March 18, celebrate Submarine Day with a trip to the aquarium. Your kids will see and learn about different kinds of fish and watch them up close as they swim in the tank. You can also use this experience to come up with some really cool underwater ideas for a DIY room decorating project.

Creating an Underwater Room for Kids

With a little imagination and a few items, you'll transform your kid’s room into an underwater world. For the lighting, replace the standard bulbs in the lamps with light and dark blue bulbs. Using a textured lamp shade will help to cast a water pattern on the walls, and the blue light will add to the effect.

If you’re artistically inclined, a few painted fish and coral will add the perfect touch to your sea faring adventure. For those whose talents lie elsewhere, vinyl wall art is a great option for semi-permanent decorations.

A large cardboard box makes the perfect submarine for kids, but you'll have to alter it a little bit. Paint it a bright yellow color, and cut portholes in the sides so that your children can look out. You can also add designs to the outside and paint controls and pressure gauges inside.
